Artist’s Statement
Since my days as an undergraduate philosophy student I have been intrigued with the strengths, vulnerabilities, and dignity humans display when handling life’s ironies and inconsistencies. Later in life while living in Bogota, Colombia I had the opportunity to formally explore another passion, art, and the same observations and questions became the subject matter of my work. These combined disciplines and twenty years of foreign living blended to shape my artistic path.
Several mediums give visual voice to my imagination. I build acrylic or alkyd (a quick drying oil) compositions with many layers of opaque paint and transparent glazes. Pencil offers the opportunity to express ideas in pure tonal values. Computer technology gives me a means to move beyond long-established techniques but my digital work does reflect my classical training in color, perspective and composition. By manipulating and combining computer-scanned elements from my drawings, paintings, and photographs I add new layers of meaning to my traditional work .
