Artist Statement
Janet is an artist, poet and arts educator. She enjoys exploring image, texture and story through the process of mixed media. She cuts, tears apart, paints over, and combines textures with her images until a new environment is created. She also explores the process of mixed media and construction using found, purchased and made objects. She often combines drawing, painting and collage within the constructions. The process is intuitive as each part determines where and how they want to come together to tell the story of moments in time.
She worked at The Children’s Cancer Hospital, University of Texas, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center for over ten years as artist/facilitator and was part of the team that created “Street SmART”, a creative arts project for Harris Country Juvenile Probation in Houston. It has been my joy to expose children to creativity, to show them how to touch those places inside themselves that know what to draw next, or write or sculpt and how to connect to their inner artist.
Janet is also a poet. She has poems published in Enchantment of the Ordinary, Mutabalis Press, Time Slice: Houston Poetry, Mutabalis Press, Suddenly IV, (Prose, Poetry and Sudden Fiction, Anthology of Texas Writers, Stone River Press to name a few. She also has completed a manuscript of 50 poems dealing with her work with children with cancer.
